Individual & Partnership Therapy

Individual Therapy Sessions

Newcastle Paediatric Occupational Therapy provides a unique and fun therapeutic environment for treatment. Following the assessment, individual therapy sessions may be recommended for your child. Treatment sessions of 30 minutes or 60 minutes will be structured depending on the nature of your child's treatment plan.

Individual therapy involves a block of appointments where Melanie works directly with your child on activities that are aimed at improving their skill level, building their confidence, achieving goals and having fun. During this block of treatment, home activities may be suggested that can be incorporated into your daily routine.

Working in Partnership

Melanie will often work in partnership with your child's teacher, liaising with them to ensure that home, school and therapy are all working towards a common goal. Melanie works skilfully in school settings, offering strategies for teachers and advocacy for children and families when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are therapy services for children, and how do they help?

Therapy services for children aim to address developmental challenges, such as improving motor skills, sensory processing, communication, and self-care abilities. These services are often tailored to the individual needs of each child, using engaging activities to target specific goals. For instance, therapy may focus on building fine motor skills through play-based exercises or helping a child regulate sensory input to improve focus and emotional balance. The primary goal is to provide children with tools and strategies that enable them to navigate their daily lives with greater independence and confidence.

  • How do therapy sessions typically work?

Therapy sessions are structured to meet a child’s unique developmental needs. A session may involve activities like games, hands-on exercises, and skill-building tasks designed to be both enjoyable and purposeful. Therapists often incorporate techniques that align with the child’s interests to maintain engagement and encourage steady progress. Sessions may also include guidance for parents or caregivers on how to reinforce these skills at home. The frequency and duration of sessions vary depending on the child’s specific challenges and the overall therapy plan.

  • Who can benefit from therapy services for children?

Children facing challenges with motor coordination, sensory processing, social skills, or self-care can benefit from therapy services. These services are suitable for children with conditions such as developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, or dyspraxia, as well as those who may simply need extra support in certain areas. Early intervention is often key to helping children develop essential skills and achieve important milestones. By addressing challenges at a young age, therapy can support long-term growth and success in school, at home, and in social settings.
